Black Lake in Žabljak – the Durmitor jewel at 1,442 m

After your Tara River rafting adventure and a rest at the Eco Camp KLJAJEVIĆA LUKA, we recommend a trip to Black Lake (Crno jezero)—Durmitor’s most famous lake, just 20 km from our camp (about 2.5 km from Žabljak’s center). Set at 1,442 m a.s.l. on the edge of the Jezerska Plateau, the lake enchants with its deep green—almost black—water, the shade of conifer forests, and the dramatic massif of Međed rising above the shore.

Why visit Black Lake

• Iconic scenery: a mirror-like surface framed by fir, pine, and spruce, with trails lined by moss and bilberries.
• Two basins: Black Lake is actually Two Lakes—Veliko (Big) and Malo (Small)—linked by a narrow isthmus, perfect for photos and an easy loop walk.
• Alpine downtime: wide banks for relaxing after an active day; ideal for families, couples, and nature lovers.

Geography & the “secret” of Black Lake

Glacial in origin, the lake formed in a cirque carved by ice below Durmitor’s peaks. It measures roughly 1,155 m in length and 810 m in width. The maximum depth of the Big Lake is about 26 m, while the Small Lake reaches approximately 50 m. A rare hydrological feature here is bifurcation: divided subsurface waters travel for kilometers beneath the Durmitor massif, feeding both the Tara and the Piva—and ultimately meet again at Šćepan Polje, where the Piva and Tara form the Drina.

Getting there & what to bring

• From the camp: a short, paved drive; on request we can arrange a transfer directly to the site.
• Footwear & clothing: comfortable trainers or hiking shoes and layered clothing; in summer bring a hat and sunscreen.
• Activities: a well-marked circular trail, photography, and peaceful picnics—please follow park rules and stay on trails.
